Scholars Online

Students at the high school level rarely have the chance to study astronomy in detail, but this is my favorite science course to teach. Using live chat discussions, weekly exercises, and lots and lots of pictures and simulations, we lay out the methods astronomers use to explore the universe, follow the development of theories of gravity and relativity that govern our understanding of cosmology, and examine the results of telescope surveys and unmanned exploration of the solar system, the Milky Way, and the galaxies beyond. This is a great course for students who are not quite ready to tackle chemistry and physics (it only requires Algebra I), but also for senior students looking to round out their high school science program. I even accept adults who just want to learn more about modern astronomy and the wonders of our universe!

Lab work is optional, but encouraged! Every unit includes an observation exercise or practical demonstration of the forces shaping the planets in our solar system and the methods used to observe distant objects.

Enroll by August 20 at Scholars Online! Courses are accredited.
